Most masking sounds work by being constant. Waves work by being rhythmic: a swell builds, breaks, washes out, and returns roughly every eight to twelve seconds — close to the cadence of slow, relaxed breathing. Listeners tend to sync to it unconsciously, which is why wave audio feels less like background noise and more like being paced to sleep. Underneath the rhythm, the broadband wash of water still masks voices and traffic like rain does.

The recording matters more here than with any steady noise: waves that crash too close jolt instead of soothe. Why do ocean waves make me sleepy?

Waves combine two mechanisms: broadband water sound that masks disturbances (like rain or pink noise does), and a slow, regular swell rhythm — roughly every ten seconds — that relaxed breathing naturally falls into step with. Constant noise only does the first; the shoreline does both at once.

Are wave sounds better than white noise for sleep?

Different tools. White noise is perfectly steady and masks hardest; waves trade a little masking for rhythm and atmosphere, which many people find easier to fall asleep to.
